World No Tobacco Day 2010

This year SmokeCheck promoted World No Tobacco Day through emails, text messages and our website which included this information sheet. Our focus was to encourage all SmokeCheck-trained workers to make a special effort on World No Tobacco Day and have an encouraging yarn with Aboriginal women about their smoking. Thank you for talking to your clients about their smoking on World No Tobacco Day. During May we had over 1,200 hits on our website and the highest hit page was the World No Tobacco Day page. We also had requests for over 1900 SmokeCheck resources!

World No Tobacco Day 2010 gave overdue recognition to the importance of the health of women and the devastating consequences of smoking to their own health, family and community. ‘Protecting and promoting the health of women is crucial to health and development - not only for the citizens of today but also for those of future generations’, said Margaret Chan, World Health Organization Director-General.

World No Tobacco Day at Redfern AMS

The SmokeCheck team attended a fantastic community event for World No Tobacco Day in Redfern AMS. Thanks to the organisers for having us and for a really great day. This event was for the community and staff, including the Area Health Service. The service took the occasion to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between SSWAHS, Redfern AMS, Tharawal AMS and Babana Aboriginal Men’s Group. The event was covered in the Aboriginal & Islander Health Worker Journal July/August 2010 edition!

‘Kick the Habit’ was launched on World No Tobacco Day

Six participating Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) and their communities, in conjunction with the Aboriginal Health & Medical Research Council (AH&MRC), launched ‘Kick the Habit’ social marketing campaign on World No Tobacco Day. The aim of the ‘Kick the Habit’ is to promote and increase the awareness of smoking cessation options in Aboriginal communities.

Champion ex-smokers from each of the communities volunteered to star in video advertisements, promoting key messages to their communities. 17 video ads have been created and posted on YouTube.

A number of resources have been developed to compliment the videos including posters, pamphlets and wrist bands. ‘Kick the Habit’ also has a Facebook page which hosts all the videos and allows comments.

The aim of the ‘Kick the Habit’ campaign is to promote and increase the awareness of smoking cessation options in Aboriginal communities by:

  • increasing promotion of Quitline among the relevant/participating communities
  • raising awareness of Quitline among the participating communities
  • encouraging use of the Quitline among the relevant/participating communities
  • developing and disseminating campaign resources that target the whole community by using different approaches for young people, elders, and pregnant women and potentially other groups

Quit Smoking on World No Tobacco Day – The Day I Quit website

The Cancer Institute promoted World No Tobacco Day as the day to prepare to quit. They set up The Day I Quit website to share the experiences and stories of recent quitters who they refer to as 'our heros'. At the heart of their experiences are the positive implications of how quitting smoking has benefitted them and their families. SmokeCheck encourage you to take the pledge to quit smoking and it would be great if you could support your clients to do the same. Through this site you can also join in the discussions on Facebook!
